Paper Clips and Spices
February 9, 2009
My mother is a teacher, so there are always paperclips lying around. You would think that after 8 years of it, I would get used to finding paperclips in the fruit bowl or in the washing machine. But I don’t. As I was doing the laundry today, I was fussing over what to write my blog entry over, and what my demonstration speech should be about. (I never said I was organized or sane or that I wasn’t a procrastinator.) I came across two paperclips, which got me thinking. What is it that holds life together, that holds people together? And then it hit me. Other people. And you’re thinking, well what in the world does this have to do with speech class?
And this is what I say to you, A LOT.
Human interaction is what makes up this world. It’s the war and it’s the peace corps. It’s a mother rocking her baby and singing a lullaby. It’s a teacher helping you with a math problem. It’s holding hands with that special someone. Maybe voicing feelings isn’t always necessary, but it helps. Most of us spend just as much time speaking as we do not speaking. It really makes you wonder what the big deal really is about speaking in public. It’s one person to another. It’s that arm you offer to someone who can’t walk as strongly. It’s a smile to a sad soul. It’s life. It’s human. Human interaction is the flavor of life and words are the spices.
This paperclip epiphany that I have had has inspired me to work harder at confidence. Talking to people is one paperclip of my life and one more spice to my flavor. Maybe I’m being cheezy and ironic, but like I said, I never said I was organized or sane.

I never thought life would be compared to a paper clip, but I like it. Thats something I would never think of. But I completely agree.
