Persuasive Speech Topic: Cell Phone Use is out of Control

June 7, 2009

It’s Monday morning, and you are cleaning your house. After a while, you stumble upon a miss call on your phone. You look to see who it was. It’s your child. You ask yourself why she or he is calling while they are at school. When you listen to the message all they wanted to do was to talk.

My question is should we ban cell phones in school. The reason I ask is because cell phones use is out of control. It’s a loosing battle, especially at the high school level. They are part of the younger generations survival kit, just as Spalding high bounce balls were in the 50’s.

My philosophy is that we lived a hundred years without them and we should live another hundred years without them if we choose to do so. They are nothing but a disruption to class instruction. Students are not there to make calls, they are there to learn. The schools all have phones and the children can use those to contact their parents or homes in emergency situations. When I was in school I had to use the phone in the office or the pay phone in the cafeteria. I didn’t even use any other student’s phone.

The cell phone is a distraction in class especially when the teacher is lecturing or when a student is giving a presentation. I believe it is disrespectful to others. I have heard from other instructors, that students text each other for answers when taking a test. That would be consider cheating. I believe it is sad because they know they are going to get caught no matter what and they can get expelled from school because of cheating. Today, people are even using phones to take nude pictures of themselves. It is crazy.

In my conclusion, I would recommend that you guys think a second time to give your child a cell phone to take it to school. Any question?

I agree 100% about the use of cell phone it is very disrespectful to use your phone during calls. I have seen this done in our speech class. People are loosing respect for others.

I agree, cell phones can cause a lot of problems with teenagers. Most of the time, teens can’t keep their minds off of text messenging, its an addiction. They are constantly checking, like every 3 or 4 minutes even at school or at work. It is ridiculous. I also, realize the importance for people to be in touch and that it is good to have cell phones, but like everything else, there needs to be some rules and regulations at school. I think it is okay with strong supervision.

When I was in school the big issues was kids bringing walkmans to class. They would be taken from you and kept untilt he end of the year. But now, kids have MP3 players, Cell phones and other gadgets and are allowed to use them frequently while at school. Why? Why is this not regulated as it was with toys and electronics 10, 20, 30, 40 + years ago.

I agree that cell phone usage should be prohibited especially during school. You are also correct in that it is distracting to others and disrespectful to say the least. Technology is a great thing – however, we do need to regulate its use.

Cell phones are great for emergencies. I think you said it well no one should be aloud to have cell phones in school or for that matter they shouldnt be aloud at church or in doctors offices. I also think it is rude when you are talking to someone and they are texting to someone else on there phone how wrong is that…

Ok, I somewhat agree and somewhat disagree. Elementary school students and middle school students shouldn’t be allowed to have cell phones in school. For one they are to young. Now high school students are a little different., they are older and should be more mature and knowing when is an ok time to text or make calls and when it is inappropriate. For example, lunch time, perfectly ok for students to text and talk all they want but when there in a classroom it should not under any circumstance be allowed PERIOD! Yes some some, well ok A LOT of students use it to cheat on a test or quiz but there taking that chance that oh my gosh, what happens if I do get caught not only texting but cheating? If the kids are going to make the decision to text and risk getting caught and getting in trouble its their own stupid fault. One more thing there is a law that you can’t kill/murder someone, just so there is a law do you think people are going to not break it? People kill people everyday so whats a cell phone law going to do for that? ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING!!! Great speech I see the points you are trying to make!

I agree with you Ashley, high school students should be mature enough to know when it is appropriate to use there cells and not to. At my high school there is a school board rule that states that teachers nor students are aloud to use them from 7:00 to 2:00 our school hours nor bring them to CLASS we are allowed to bring them to school and store them in our locker, or car. School isn’t like it was when my parents and my friends parents were in high school there is way more voilence going on not only in the world but in the school. Anything may occur while we are in school. There has been many incidents all over the u.s were students have brought guns to school an held the school hostage. Anything can occur while at school so why not bring your phone I feel like it is on you if you want to get it taken but why does all high school students have to suffer because their are some teens that are imature, inresponsible and they do not care. Take their phones why ban them from people like me that have to stay after school for different activities an need there phone to call home because the office is close. I understand why some parents may feel that cell phones are out of control but there not for all teens before there is a law to ban them can you please consider all teens an not just yours it is going to affect all of us.
