Goodbye but not Forgotten

Well, today was the last day of speech class and I am really sad to see it all end. Everyone gave such good speeches and Mrs. “B” has been a wonderful teacher. I know everyone hates to see her go and we will all miss her. I think the most important things that Candee has taught us in speech class is that it is good to try new things, to be yourself, and speak from the heart.

I would like to thank everyone in class for revealing a little piece of themselves during their presentations. This is what made it possible for all of us to bond so tightly with each other; an experience I will never forget. Good luck to every one and God Bless… until we all meet again.

sincerely, Julie Gray

Lessons Learned

I have really enjoyed reading everyone’s blogs this quarter. I got a slow start on learning how to blog; I never knew there was such a thing. However, after I got the hang of  it, I really enjoyed blogging. It’s interesting to read about how other classmates viewed their own presentations. More often than not, we are our own worst critic. Therefore, it felt good to be able to comfort others through blogging. I hope Mrs. Basford met her goal for this blog.

P. S. I hope I met my goal too!

Time Out

The persuasive speech seemed like it was going to be a big challenge for me. I was very apprehensive and didn’t really know how to go about preparing for it. I am not a forceful person by nature and I felt uncomfortable about trying to coax the class to see my point of view. However, Mrs. Basford gave me ideas on how to be less forceful, yet still make my point of view. So, I chose a topic that was right for me. I have talked about food related topics through out the quarter, so I choose to conclude on that note. I ended up giving a speech on how important having family dinner together is.

I was nervous because I didn’t know how the class would react to my topic. I was afraid that they might think it would be boring. I hope that I gave interesting facts about the negative and positive aspects of having dinner together as a family. Also, I hope that I gave some ideas on how to plan for a family dinner night at home and that they try to get together more often with their families.

I hope that at least one of my speeches made a difference to someone. I have learned so much from everyone else’s.

A slice of pie

Hey guys! The demonstration speeches have been very entertaining to say the least, as well as educational. It’s nice to see everyone taking pride in showing off their demonstration skills. I have learned everything from fitting into a sheet of paper to playing a guitar! I hope that I contributed my part to the class by demonstrating how to prepare pie crust. I know that I was proud to share my baking skills by giving everyone a slice of homemade pie.

Informing with “Eatable” Props

Hello to everyone from Mrs. Basford’s class. I have enjoyed preparing for the informative speech. This has been an opportunity for me to learn something new, as well as show off a little of what I already know about chocolate. It was fun to be able to share with the class the things that I learned about the cocoa tree and different kinds of chocolate. And although I didn’t use visual props for my speech I think the class was pleasantly pleased with the eatable aids I opted for instead. I really enjoy watching everyone else give their presentations too. There is so much variety in the topics people choose and I am learning so much. Who knew that speech class would be so much fun!

Chick Chat

Hello fellow speech mates. Spring has finally arrived in the Ohio Valley and baby chicks are hatching by the basket full. I hope Mrs. Basfords’ speech class liked the Easter chicks as much as I enjoyed sharing them with my reading presentation. I must say,  it seemed a little ironic how those baby “peeps” had so much to chirp about in class. I on the other hand, ran out of words to say before my presentation time was finished.

Consequently, I did learn a valuable lesson. It is very important to critique the timing of a speech before  presenting it. This lack of attention cost me a few points. That’s okay, I realize this was my first attempt at preparing a speech and I still have a lot to learn. I hope this will be helpful advise to other beginners organizing their first speech.  Also, try to relax up in front of the classroom and have fun. We are all in this together!
