The fun of demonstrations…

I absolutely loved doing the demonstration speech. I felt right at home talking about grilling because it is something I do constantly. I claim to be no expert in the field, but demonstrating what works for me was a lot of fun. As much as I enjoyed sharing what I know, I enjoyed watching others demonstrate their skills as well. I love to talk, but listening was the best part. I not only get to learn more about my peers, but I learned some cool stuff along the way. The flowers that Alicia did were really cool. And who could forget all the food?!? Popcorn, and cookies, and pies, and on and on.

I did my piece on grilling because it is something I love that always brings my family together. After sharing with all of you it makes me feel part of another family. It is a special feeling.

SUGAR COOKIES!

Sugar cookies are in fact my favorite kind of cookie! I do not eat them on a regular basis though, lol. When I was trying to decide what I was going to do my demonstration speech on cookies was the first thing that popped in my head. Everyone just about, was going to cook for their demonstration speech. So I figured what the heck I can do something like that. Well I don’t know who ate some of my cookies but I know that they were pretty good.

I loved everyone’s desserts, snacks, and BBQ chicken. I really enjoyed the interaction I had with the entire class throughout all the speeches I’ve given. My demonstration speech though was roughly put together, because I lost the original recipe I had for the sugar cookies so I had the last-minute to look one up and go off that to give my speech on and not to mention to bake before I came to class that evening. I enjoyed every minute of it though and I hope you all enjoyed the cookies!!!

Speeches scare me

When I started to give my first speech I was terrified! I felt my whole body go numb and my face got hot! I was so nervous! After giving a couple more speeches it totally changed my way on how I speak to people in general. I’m not as scared, still not comfortable, but the important part is I’m not as scared. Speeches have never been my favorite no matter in what class. I really had no idea what I was getting myself into when I signed up for this speech class. Overall though, I had a great time. Especially watching everyone’s demonstration speech. Thank you all for providing me with laughter and tears throughout this entire class and I wish you all well throughout the rest of your school days to come.

Food & Family Time

I recently gave my demonstration speech, which went fairly easy. It seems like the more speeches I do, the easier it gets (which I love!). I especially enjoyed the demonstration speeches because it involved a lot of good food and treats! Everyone did wonderful, and I can already tell once summer comes, this will be the class I’ll miss the most… Mrs. Basford and the classmates! Thanks everyone for a great speech experience :)

Demonstration Speech.. Short, sweet and to the point!

Last week, I gave my demonstrative speech… It was about how to make cupcakes. Short, sweet and simple.

I let my nerves get the best of me and totally lost my train of thought. So I improvised, I added stuff about me. To be honest, I am a good cook and baker. I just tend to forget the little things, like to not get egg shells in the batter. But that is okay. Cause from speech I learned that it is okay to not be perfect.

This is a lesson I really needed to learn for my life. I always put my expectations so high that it is almost unreachable. So for that I am thankful for this class. It made me understand that it is okay to make mistakes.

I would also like to thank Candee for helping me realize this and that it is okay to be nervous. You are going to be greatly missed. :)

At Ease with Demonstration Speech

Out of the three speeches we’ve accomplished in this class I’m going to have to say that this was my favorite. Even though my original speech was going to be over how to change the oil in a car, the weather wasn’t exactly willing. The further we get into this quarter the closer I have come to know  my class mates and my comfort with public speaking has really grown. When I gave my demonstration speech I felt completely at ease, no worries at all. I enjoyed speaking on how do to a simple task cause I learned a lot about kool-aid while also making something I love.  Thanks for all the feed back it really helped.

Creating Art

I did my demonstration speech on linoleum block printing. I liked the demonstration speeches the best by far- everyone was able to show something that they knew how to do well or something that interested them.  Through these speeches I believe we were able to learn more about our classmates.  I was a little flustered during my speech. I seem to find something wrong after every speech I give, but my classmates are so supportive. Everyone’s speeches are always so wonderful- maybe I’m trying too hard to feel as if I’m not messing up too badly. No matter, the support we all receive  is what makes this class so special. We are about to give our last speech and it may be the hardest speech we have yet to give. I wish everyone good luck! Your classmates will be rooting for you!

Everything is coming together!!

With graduation right around the corner, you can tell everyone is getting excited.  We have one speech left and then we have nailed this class.  Some probably never thought they would make it this far but to their surprise this class was easier than they thought.

demonstration speeches were wonderful!  Everyone has demonstrated something different, no two demos were the same.  I demonstrated how to take blood pressure and the importance of keeping your blood pressure normal.

The visuals were pretty amazing also!  All we have left is the persuasive speeches.

Thanks to everyone for making this a great class!!!

Stepped Out of my Box and Gained Confidence

For my visual reflection, I decided to make a box, because in the beginning I didn’t want to take this class, but I had to graduate. I was kinda in a box to say the least and never liked to get up and talk in front of people.  Now however, I am so glad that I took it! Speech class is a lot of fun and like in my reflection it has allowed me to , “step out of my box and gain confidence.” I’m no longer that nervous to get up there and give my speech. My class has helped out a lot and everyone is very supportive.

The demonstration speeches were a lot of fun and I have learned a lot. Everyone did very well. For my demonstration speech I did chocolate graduation caps since graduation is coming up. You take a miniature Reese cup and flip it upside down. You then take a dab of peanut butter and place it on top of that. Next, you take a chocolate covered graham cracker and place it on top of the Reese cup. You then put another dab of peanut butter on top of that. And last you take a fruit roll-up and cut a piece of and place it on top of the graham cracker as a tassel. It is a really quick and easy graduation party dessert.

I am really looking forward to everyone’s last speech and excited to do mine with Shayla!

One more left!

The demonstration speech was the one I assumed would be the easiest to do but I actually found it very hard to do! Its hard to make a three minute speech over something you do everyday quite quickly, like make a flurry.  Its not hard to do but it was sure hard to talk about.

I’m more excited for the persuasive speech coming up that I get to do with Courtney.  I think it will be a lot of fun.  Also, I can’t believe that this quarter is almost over and that it is our last quarter with Candee.  Speech classes next year beware, because she makes it so easy and natural to do I can’t imagine who could take her place.  I am very proud of myself and everyone else for how great we all have done on our speeches so far and how great we will do on the ones to come.

Speech Class=Fun?

Well I must say the demonstration speech was easier than I thought possible. I looked at a few possible ideas for the speech, but none really stood out for me. I had recently been playing Hacky Sack before and after work so it finally came to me that Hack could be my topic. I mean why not? Its fun and I could get people involved. Of course I was still nervous getting up there and looking at everyone, but once I started talking about Hack it became really easy for me to relax. Hack is a game and what’s to be nervous about a game I’ve played for years? Once others joined in on the game and demonstrating it, my fears flew out the door. I was having a blast! It came to me that I was actually getting graded for playing a game! This class has taught me so much and it’s all thanks to Candee and my supportive classmates!

Demonstration Speeches are the best!

This past week we have been giving demonstration speeches and I have enjoyed them more than any of the other speeches we have given. I like them better because they are more entertaining and you get to learn how to do new things and if someone demonstrates how to make a certain kind of food, then we get to eat it! I enjoyed giving my demonstrative more than any of the other speeches I have given so far because instead of just talking, I also got to be doing something else, which in my case was making chocolate chip cookies. It made me feel more relaxed because I wasn’t so concentrated on what I was saying, I was also  focusing on making the cookies.  There are still a few more people that have to give their speeches, but everyone that has gone so far has done a great job. In my opinion, I think that each person’s speeches gets better each speech they give. Confidence is definitely growing in all of us and that is one of the many great things that we will take with us after this class is over.

Turkey Hunting

This past speech was a demonstration. I taught the class about turkey hunting. I felt like I did a good job. I thought that my eye contact and volume was really good. I also dressed in full camouflage and brought in all of my equipment so that the class would get the full experience of turkey hunting. I taught the class a little history on turkeys, about their tendencies, how to set up for best success, and also how to position yourself for the shot. I feel like the class got a better understanding of turkey hunting and could possibly go hunting for themselves.  I hope everyone goes out and tries it for themselves.

A slice of pie

Hey guys! The demonstration speeches have been very entertaining to say the least, as well as educational. It’s nice to see everyone taking pride in showing off their demonstration skills. I have learned everything from fitting into a sheet of paper to playing a guitar! I hope that I contributed my part to the class by demonstrating how to prepare pie crust. I know that I was proud to share my baking skills by giving everyone a slice of homemade pie.

Informing with “Eatable” Props

Hello to everyone from Mrs. Basford’s class. I have enjoyed preparing for the informative speech. This has been an opportunity for me to learn something new, as well as show off a little of what I already know about chocolate. It was fun to be able to share with the class the things that I learned about the cocoa tree and different kinds of chocolate. And although I didn’t use visual props for my speech I think the class was pleasantly pleased with the eatable aids I opted for instead. I really enjoy watching everyone else give their presentations too. There is so much variety in the topics people choose and I am learning so much. Who knew that speech class would be so much fun!

Demonstration Speech

This week me and my classmates were assigned to give a demonstrative speech that we were credible for.  This speech is somewhat similar to the informative speech from before, only difference is that we have to perform a demonstration of what were talking about.  For me this speech was a little more difficult than the informative mainly because not only did we have to talk about our subject in a certain format but had to organize a demonstration relating to the topic.  Once I made my speech I felt that I had a better grasp on public speaking.  As the class progresses on I’m finding less difficult with public speaking.  I’m more familiar with being organized and how to format my speeches, and becoming more successful with how to present a public speech.

That’s How The Cookie Crumbles

Well the demonstration speech has come to me a lot easier than the last two that I had to do. I was still a little tense and some of the comments I got said to not be so tense. Picking this topic was very easy after I sat down to think about it. I was trying to decide what I should demonstrate because every part of making a cheesecake is very messy and so I picked the least messy part which was the Oreo crust.

While I was up on the podium I still felt scared just a little bit but not as much as I was before. When I first said the topic everyone looked at me with faces of whether they did or didn’t like it which at the end we people came and got the cheesecake I still had much to take home. Even though some of the cheesecake I didn’t bring was because of the incident I had that morning when I decided to drop half the cheesecake on me getting ready for school.

I do feel like I am getting way better with speaking in front of people than when I first did my reading. I would most definitely have to thank my classmates and Candee, who has informed the class that she won’t be teaching at SSCC any more,  for making me feel more comfortable with public speaking. I will alway remember Candee as one of the best teachers that I can say I have had since being at SSCC for only 3 quarters.

Something as simple as making a paper airplane makes a great speech!

So after pondering for a good while on what I would do for a good speech I couldn’t think of a good topic.  I asked one of my close friends what they thought I should give the speech on and their advice to me was do it on something that has always been fun for you.  Something that is simple .  Something that you are good at, and most of all something that would be easy for the class to participate in.  I chose to show the entire class how to make a paper airplane.

Why?  I am good at it.  It’s always been fun for me, and it is simple for the whole class.  It was the perfect idea.  When I came in to the class I brought in enough sheets for the whole class and showed them how to make a paper airplane called the dart.  At first I did not know how everyone would like the presentation but it turned out really well.  Once every one had their sheet of paper with the help of my friend Kate we began on making our planes.  The steps to making the paper airplane were so simple to me.  I had tons of practice from making them for many years.  Every one in the class had fun and no one had trouble making the dart.  After every one had their plane finished they threw them across the room and the whole speech was a great success!

showmanship demo

Bringing my horse to school was an experience. It rained for two days before and he was so dirty I was almost embarrassed to show him off. In the end I got him there with the help of my little brother. I decided to do my demo in showmanship because for one I did not have enough time to actually ride him and also because of the importance of showmanship for people who show and people who just have horses around the house. Showmanship developers a relationship with horse and handler that will help them in ever aspect of ridding and owning horses. Once a person gets control of their horse on the ground it will be exponentially easier for them to remain control when they are mounted.

Mozart, the horse I choose to bring to school is my horse, my baby boy. I bought him at a sale when he was a yearling and have had him ever since. I trained him myself with the help of family and 4-H advisers. I am very proud of his accomplishments in and outside the show ring, and I am happy that I got to grow up with a horse as one of my best friends like every little girl dreams of.

I am happy that people got to experience a little bit of the fun of having horses when I brought him in. And, I was very surprised that there were so many people in my class that were scared of horses.
