The Importance of Speech Rehearsal

To reiterate the importance of rehearsing your speech, I will tell you a story about the youth minister of my local church, we will call him Chris. It was just a regular Sunday morning: the sun was rising, everyone was taking their seats after the end of communion to listen to the Chris’s sermon. Chris took to the stage and began to preach his sermon to the gym-turned-sanctuary of the youth service. His sermon went well as usual until he went to quote scripture. He started the verse, “Do not be misled…”. The quotation would not have drawn too much attention except Chris pronounced the word “mysled” with a silent “e”. Everyone in the crowd burst out in laughter once they registered what they had heard. Now, this situation could have been averted had Chris simply went through his outline with someone before Sunday because the typo could have been caught and fixed with minimal effort. Safe to say, that is exactly what Chris does now. Every week, he reviews his outline with someone else present.
