Speaking For Your Future

When deciding which classes to take, speech is one class not many students I have talked to feel is of much necessity. Yet speech is one of the most, if not the most, important classes one can take in order to enhance their chances at a better future. You can have all the knowledge in the world about any area of study, yet if you have no way to clearly communicate it then it is pointless, and the knowledge is nearly useless.

Just think about all the people who have given a speech about their field of study, and at the end of their first sentence you’ve already wandered off to whatever it is you like to think about when you’re bored, then at the end of the speech you go “thank God! Now I can go do the important things that i just sat and thought about.” This represents the person who has invested the time and labor in learning what they feel is important, yet have not taken the time to learn how to properly present it in a speech to an audience, so that when they try to tell others they completely lose any intended effect of their entire speech.

Speech is the most critical skill, talent, or gift (depending on how you consider it) of our society. When choosing your career or going for any job, your ability to speak can set you above the others. If you can tell the person who is potentially hiring you what you can offer them, or what you’re capable of in a manner that suits them as the audience then you stand a somewhat better chance at that job. So when you’re looking at classes or have a space to fill, take a speech class, because if you take all these considerations into account then speech may just not be as useless as you think.
