Visual Aid project – Importance of Creativity

So last week, instead of turning in a paper of our notes on the chapter or work on a group activity in class, we were given the assignment of creating a visual aid to represent the quarter.  It took me a little while to think of a visual that would explain what I had learned.  Lately, as a few may know, I’ve been on a flower theme for some reason (usually roses), but I wondered how interesting it would be to use a flower as a visual.  So I spent the evening creating a huge Daisy poster (it was pretty, I was proud) that signified the parts of a speech.  The yellow center represented the main topic, the petals as the specific points. Branching from the stem were leaves with the different types of speeches: Reading, Informative, Demonstrative, and persuasive.  Then a puffy cloud above for the Intro and a pot of soil at the base for the conclusion.  It took some thought, but it is fairly self-explanatory.

I really enjoyed this assignment because I feel it is very important for students to use their creativity aside from just their intellect in the classroom setting, and this gave everyone a chance to try something different for a change.  I admit, if I had given it more time I might have come up with a song and dance or something theatrical! Just kidding, that would be a little extreme, but in speech I learned it is essential to throw the creative side in too because that’s when the “real speaker” comes out as it becomes more your own (and less robotic so to speak).  So just a word of encouragement for any speakers: get creative!
